Training Requirements

Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residency

Certification of individuals trained in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities is provided by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). To be eligible for examination you must have satisfactorily completed all prerequisite training and four years of NDD residency training. All training must be done in an ACGME approved program. Prerequisite training:

  • 2 years of residency training in Pediatrics in an ACGME approved program.
Neurodevelopmental Disabilities training (4 years):
  • 1 year of adult Neurology.
  • 18 months of clinical Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
  • 18 months of clinical and basic science

Child Neurology Residency

Certification of individuals trained in Child Neurology is provided by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). To be eligible for examination you must have satisfactorily completed all prerequisite training and three years of Child Neurology residency training. All training must be done in an ACGME approved program.

Prerequisite training (3 options):

  • 2 years of residency training in Pediatrics in the United States or Canada, or
  • 1 PGY-1 year (as described in the Program Requirements for Residency Education in Neurology, Section I.A.1) and 1 year of residency training in Pediatrics, or
  • 1 year of Pediatrics plus 1 year of Neuroscience training.

Child Neurology training (3 years):

  • 1 year of training must be in clinical adult Neurology.
  • 1 year of training shall be referred to as flexible, and the resident must learn the principles of neurophysiology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, neuro-ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, neurological surgery, neurodevelopment, and the basic neurosciences.
  • 1 year of training shall be in clinical Child Neurology

Accreditation of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and Child Neurology training programs is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME sets General Requirements for all residency training programs and Special Requirements for each specialty. These requirements are enforced by the various Residency Review Committees (RRC).
