Training Requirements
Since the American Board of Ophthalmology and the ACGME have not officially
defined any sub-specialty areas in Ophthalmology, no fellowships can be ACGME
accredited, nor can it lead to official certification of the individuals
trained.
Some sub-specialty groups have developed their own approval system. For
Pediatric Ophthalmology, the programs that meet the criteria of the American
Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology are identified under the comments
section of the program listing
Prerequisites for training are determined by the individual preceptors.
Clinical fellowships that involve direct patient care will generally require
a completed Ophthalmology residency and a license to practice.
Research oriented fellowships may also be open to pre-residency applicants
and to foreign applicants who do not yet have a license to practice in the
U.S. The OFM directory contains a list of programs that are willing to consider
applications from foreign and from pre-residency applicants. Details need
to be discussed with each program individually.
